If you wish to train your dog to hunt wait for him to reach 7 or 8 months old before taking him on a real discovery of game. Before that age he can easily accompany you in the forest or in the fields where the mixture of odours will awaken his spirit.
To begin with half a days' hunting is more than ample as he is still a young dog and he will be exhausted. Keep him on a lead especially if you are on a hunting ground for large game.
The Border has an exceptional nose which will lead him very naturally to seeing : you will simply need to praise him when he sets off which will leave him in no doubt of his job !!
The Border is a very versatile dog
What you need to know :
- At the beginning take him hunting for otter (is this where his miming of that animal come from ?)
- Water is second nature to him, he is a perfect swimmer and doesn't hesitate to plunge into icy waters as he is protected by a very thick skin and dense thick hair.
- He is equally good at hunting - on the one hand because he is a very sociable dog and on the other because he is very resistant and tough.
- A Border can reach speeds of up to 50 kms per hour whilst hunting and he can follow galloping horses for hours.
- He excels when hunting big game such as wild bore and deer. As he is not a stubborn dog he will come back to the call and not venture too far away
- He also is a perfect dog to find injured game
Some clients use the Border for hunting woodcock whilst others use it for hunting hare.
This does not mean to say that he will agree to be transformed into a retriever !!!!
Others work underground searching for foxes and badgers.
The jaw of a Border terrier is extremely impressive.
His snout is short and square and has an enormous force.
